Risan

Projects in Risan

Risan Bay

Risan, the oldest settlement in Boka Kotorska, once was a port and the capital city of queen Teuta in the 3rd century BC, later an important town of Roman citizens with the main square, Forum, which was situated on the Carine field, opposite the "Teuta" hotel today, with temples and other important buildings.

The ramparts beside the small river Spila had been built in so called "Cyclops techique", of big polygon blocks, which were also discovered on the nearby hill called Gradina.

Our project is situated in a heart of this fascinating settlement.

Numerous Latin inscriptions from the Classical period have bee found, while more to the south, near the entrance to the specialized hospital "Vaso Cukovic" have been discovered the foundations of Roman villas with floors covered with mosaics, the most distinguished being the medallion with the figure of Hypnos, the Greek god of Sleep. In the park there is a small church of St. Archangel Mihail and a big church of St. Peter and Paul, both from the 18th century, whose iconostases were made by the masters of Boka Kotorska school of icon painters, from a Risan family Dimitrijevic - Rafailovic.

In a Risan hamlet of Mala (Mahala) there is St. John's church from the 19th century while above Risan, at the spring Smokovac there is St. Luke's church with the choir and the fragments of some frescoes possibly from the 16th century. Further to the west, a carst spring called Sopot comes into view only after heavy rain when it breaks through the cave above the road leading towards Morinj and in raging torents falls into the sea.

In the 19th century, Austria built a horse path leading from Risan to their fortesses at Crkvice and Grkavac which went out of use a long time ago. From Risan leads a narrow asphalt road to Ledenice, Dragulj, Grahovo and Vilusi. On the top of the ascent up the hill above Risan another road branches off to the left, leading to Crkvice very important Austrian military strongpoint, well known for the European record in the rainfall of about 4600 ml. a year.
